How often is recycling collected in San Diego?
Recycling (blue bin) is collected every other week in San Diego. The city uses an A/B week system — your recycling alternates between "Week A" and "Week B." Trash and organics are collected every week on your assigned day.
What goes in the green bin in San Diego?
San Diego's green bin is for organics: food scraps (including meat, dairy, and bones), food-soiled paper (napkins, paper towels, pizza boxes), and yard waste (leaves, grass clippings, small branches). No plastic bags — even those labeled "compostable."
Does trash pickup change on holidays in San Diego?
Yes. In 2026 the City of San Diego has five no-collection holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Independence Day does not affect 2026 pickup because July 4 falls on a Saturday, and weekend holidays don't shift collection. Starting on the holiday, pickup shifts forward one day for the rest of that week. Saturday makeup collection occurs when needed.
