Why timing matters

Bins and bulk items do not sit at the curb for long. Most households roll bins out the evening before pickup or early that morning, and the truck clears them within hours. If you show up the day after, the curb is empty.

The tricky part is that trash day is not one day for a whole city. Neighbors a few blocks apart can be on different days. That is why a simple "what day is trash day here?" question is hard to answer without a map.

2. 2. Filter to one day. Use the day buttons to show only the areas that collect on, say, Thursday. Those are the streets where bins go out Wednesday night.
3. 3. Tap an area for details. The pop-up shows the pickup day and how often recycling is collected there, such as every other week.
4. 4. Plan a short route. Pick areas close together on the same day instead of driving across town.

Recycling weeks and bulk days

In many cities, recycling is picked up every other week, not every week. On a recycling week you will see far more blue bins out, which is useful to know if you collect cans and bottles.

Bulk item pickup is usually on its own schedule. Some cities run neighborhood cleanup weeks, and others collect bulky items by appointment. The map shows regular trash pickup days, so check your city's bulk item page for those dates.

Good curb etiquette

• • Take only what is clearly set out as free or for pickup. Stay on the public curb, not in driveways or yards.
• • Do not dig through bins or leave a mess. Anything that spills is now on someone else's street.
• • Leave items the truck can still collect in place, and never block the bins.
• • If a homeowner is outside, just ask. Most people are happy to see things reused.
